Friends of Northern Lake Champlain |
Welcome to the Friends of Northern Lake Champlain (FNLC), an organization formed so that local citizens and businesses could be more active in efforts to clean up Missisquoi Bay and northern Lake Champlain. We came together as a hard-working, all-volunteer organization in 2004. Learn more About Us ans please consider joining us today.
Our Mission
To clean and protect the waters of Northern Lake Champlain, we work collaboratively with citizens and government to reduce polluted land-use runoff into Lake Champlain.

Our Accomplishments
FNLC has successfully contributed to the reduction of sediment and phosphorus pollution from agricultural land through promotion of covercrops, low-tillage planting and other improved agricultural field practices. Over 1,000 acres of covercrop were planted in our project in fall of 2009.
FNLC has led the collaboration with other water-quality groups that produces stronger policy proposals and a stronger voice for all.
FNLC has significantly increased public engagement on water quality issues through the media and public presentations.
FNLC demands greater enforcement of regulations and works aggressively with Vermont agencies and legislators for more implementation projects and better project prioritization.
Our Priorities
Work on implementation projects, in addition to those listed in Our Accomplishments: wetland preservation, agricultural silage leachate controls, agricultural buffers, storm-water issues in Swanton, to name a few.
Get livestock out of streams and rivers, by regulation, by enforcement, with financial support for fencing and waterers.
Strengthen the position of Business Alliance for a Clean Lake. The Business Community must take a major role in advocating for faster progress in cleaning up Lake Champlain.
Increase our work with water quality groups in Quebec and the southern part of Lake Champlain.
Expand our multi-media effort to provide better information to the public. Working with our partners (St. Albans Messenger and Agency of Natural Resources), Champlain Wave will use internet, print media and social networking tools (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube), with radio and TV to follow.
